NEW YORK, September 1, 2026– Universal Pictures has already solidified its dominance in theatrical exhibition on a global scale in 2026, being the first film studio in Hollywood to reach the $3 billion mark in international box office revenues this year. The record confirmed by studio executives is only the third time since 2019 that any film studio has broken the $3 billion mark in international box office revenues, while at the same time this studio has reached this mark for the third time in its company’s history.
This remarkable success in international theatrics comes right after the previous achievement of being the first distributor to break the $4 billion mark in total global box office revenues. This historic streak was not achieved thanks to just one successful film but to the well-balanced and diversified schedule of films from various genres that consistently engaged theatrical audiences in overseas markets, as shown by box office figures.
Leading the charge abroad are three high-profile blockbusters which each grossed more than $500 million abroad. Christopher Nolan’s historical epic The Odyssey was the main driving force behind the foreign earnings, with the movie earning $988.8 million abroad and thus becoming the second biggest international success for the year so far. The other two movies joining The Odyssey in the select circle of international releases earning half a billion or more include the biographical drama Michael, which made $649.6 million abroad via the distributor’s overseas division and the international animated hit The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which wrapped up its foreign run having earned $583.2 million.
Beyond its star lineup of blockbuster films, the studio showed its depth in a truly impressive way by releasing five straight wide-release films which each grossed more than $100 million abroad: Michael, the psychological thriller Obsession ($205.2 million directly from international distribution), Disclosure Day, Minions & Monsters, and The Odyssey. The speciality division of Focus Features added to the overall achievements by performing well in foreign markets with the movie Obsession.
According to industry analysts, the impressive momentum was attributed to a stringent schedule for releasing movies alongside carefully selected partnerships with venue operators represented through the National Association of Theatre Owners that provided consistent auditorium supplies to theater owners worldwide. The company’s studio management indicated that sustaining a diverse range of productions covering everything from historical films, animation features for families, biopics, and mid-budget thrillers meant that the box office was always resilient and not vulnerable to a single tentpole movie.
With global exhibition stabilizing, the achievement has highlighted the profitability of diverse wide-release models in theaters. As there will be a lot of major movies that will be released towards the end of the year, the studio stands out to continue leading commercially in 2026.
