WASHINGTON D.C., JULY 22, 2026 – A man was shot and killed in D.C.’s Anacostia neighborhood on Friday morning, prompting a major homicide investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). The incident took place amidst a broader regional trend of declining citywide homicides.
The Incident
According to official Metropolitan Police Department alerts, Seventh District officers responded to a report of gunfire at approximately 11:35 a.m.. The shooting occurred in the 1900 block of 16th Street SE, a residential sector within the Anacostia neighborhood.
Upon arriving at the scene, the first responders located an adult male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was found completely unconscious and not breathing. D.C. Fire and EMS personnel attempted emergency lifesaving measures. The victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ongoing Investigation
MPD has withheld the victim’s name pending formal identification and notification of next of kin. Authorities have not yet released a description of potential suspects, vehicles, or a motive amid ongoing investigation. No arrests have been reported regarding any suspects as of Saturday.
The deadly shooting marks the latest entry into Washington D.C.’s 2026 violent crime metrics. There have been 51 reported homicides in the District so far in 2026. Despite recent violence, overall homicides are down 42% compared to the same tracking period last year.
The Metropolitan Police Department maintains a strict active status on this case. They are offering a standard reward of up to $25,000 for any piece of information which can lead to the arrest and conviction of perpetrators responsible for homicides within the District.
