NEW YORK, NY, August 5, 2026 — New York City officials have issued a weather alert ahead of heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to hit the city on Monday, warning residents about the risk of localised flash flooding and hazardous travel conditions.

The New York City Emergency Management Department said periods of heavy rainfall could lead to flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Authorities urged New Yorkers to stay informed about changing weather conditions and take precautions before travelling.

NYC Emergency Management said showers and thunderstorms were expected to move through the city during the day. Other storms will be capable of dropping heavy rainfall in a short period, raising the threat for flash flooding on roadways, highways and underpasses. The biggest worry is for low-lying areas that are prone to flooding when it rains heavily.

The forecasts indicate that the rainfall will vary across the region. Some areas are expected to receive only an inch or two of rainfall, while in some isolated regions, there can be 3 to 5 inches of rainfall if multiple rains fall in the same place. Urban areas like New York City and areas close to the Interstate 95 corridor are at maximum risk of flooding.

City officials warned against driving through flooded streets, which can make it hard to judge the depth of floodwater. They also warned people to keep up with weather updates, give themselves extra travel time and use caution during the morning and afternoon commute if conditions worsen.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents to remain vigilant as the storms approach.

“Summer storms can arrive with little warning, bringing flash flooding, downed tree limbs and dangerous lightning,” Mamdani said. “I urge every New Yorker to stay alert, take these storms seriously and head indoors when conditions become unsafe. “New Yorkers should keep a close eye on the forecasts and be ready to adjust travel plans as needed if the conditions change for the worse,” said Zach Iscol, New York City Emergency Management Commissioner.

Emergency Management officials cautioned those in basement apartments or vulnerable flood areas to stay on top of weather alerts and be prepared to move to higher ground if necessary. Motorists who come across roadways covered in floodwater are urged to turn around and never attempt to drive into or walk through any flooding.

According to the National Weather Service, frequent episodes of rain showers and thunderstorms will cause heavy rains in regions prone to flash floods, especially where the rain is persistent.

This weather warning occurs at a time when the area has been having several episodes of summer rains. Over-saturated soil and inadequate drainage systems pose the risk of flooding even where the rain is fleeting.

Emergency management officials encouraged residents to secure outdoor items that could be affected by strong winds accompanying thunderstorms. Motorists were also advised to reduce speed during heavy rain, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid unnecessary travel if flooding is reported.

Residents can receive emergency notifications through the city’s Notify NYC system and are encouraged to monitor official forecasts throughout the day. Authorities said weather conditions could change rapidly and urged residents to dial 911 in emergencies and use 311 for non-emergency issues.
